VE DAY - 8TH MAY 2020
VE Day celebrations were somewhat muted due to COVID-19 restrictions on social gatherings.
However, a two minutes silence was observed on Great Ashfield Airfield with the three poplar trees in the background, so close to the hearts of the 385th Bombardment Group.
Sir Winston Churchill made an impromptu visit to the village and posed for photo opportunities with residents.
In true Dunkirk spirit and on a beautiful sunny day, Great Ashfield residents decorated their houses with bunting and prepared to celebrate with socially distanced afternoon tea and cakes in their gardens.
Personal tributes were paid to friends and relations.
Lt Col TH Wilson of the Royal Army Medical Corp, the grandfather of one of Great Ashfield's residents, was captured at Dunkirk in 1940 and spent four and a half years in prisoner of war camps, spending his spare time doing needlework.
And the Great Ashfield Homeguard were remembered.
